Time to catch up on everything. Blythcon UK was fantastic. We had perfect weather and many people turned out to the great venue we had in London. It was a bit hectic at first but overall the event went of really well, of course the helmets sold out and I saw many new faces and alot of first time buyers which is really a treat for me. I don’t have words really to express how much I enjoy seeing the faces of people who are buying things from me, getting to have the luxury of time and presence to say, “Thank You!” and see the looks on faces as people choose what they are buying. For someone who largely sells online this is such a huge treat for me. Now and then I had to put people back in order and in line but its to be expected. If you were a person who were at the receiving ends of my orders to move…I’m sorry! My bark is worse than my bite and I just had to try and make some sense of the line as it was unravelling a couple times and I had people coming at me from all sides.

I hope those who came to the sewing workshop learned something useful, or came away with some inspiration. I sort of ran it off the cuff but did have a partially completed garment with me to step through the attaching of collars and sleeves. I really hope it helped people who had any doubts. More than anything I just wanted to say, LOVE what you do! Don’t be so critical, step away sometimes, take a photo, get some distance and understand you don’t have to be a machine or a robot to make lovely things. Make the best of what you have and not feel like you need ‘special tools’ or special fabrics to get the job done! Be bold, be brave and SEW!

For any of you who offered an encouraging word, comment throughout the day…you are so appreciated. Thank you. It was just a great event overall!

Just quickly I’d like to mention that this lovely set that is discussed here: Rainy Autumn Days with its lovely angora helmet, plaid dress and lace bloomers is back on E-bay. I had a non paying bidder last time so its back up for grabs. Its truly beautiful and just ask anyone who saw it at BCUK..even better in person! Here is the link for the auction now: Rainy Autumn Days 5pc. Set on E-Bay

and just a quick photo to remind you all how sweet it is:

Thank you again for all your support. You can see in the text on the right about midway down, thanks to your support EuroTrash has been able to make some great charitable donations to some really great causes.

Also in other news I am shortly relocating back to the USA. My sewing is going to slow down. I am finishing up some last things I had started but after that it will take a pause as I will have to pack and prepare for the move. I will however carry on with the helmets as much as it allows since the deco for it only requires one small box of supplies. Stay tuned, Stay in touch and I hope to be back sewing in full force as soon as possible! I will keep people informed of my situation as I know more solidly how plans progress. Big changes ahead but I’m very excited to be returning ‘home’.

Thank you again for all your support, encouragement and sharing your dolls and lives with me as well.

When I was a Little Girl…. http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/09/when-i-was-a-little-girl/ http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/09/when-i-was-a-little-girl/#comments Tue, 20 Sep 2011 20:14:01 +0000 Ruth http://eurotrashdoll.com/?p=711 read more »]]> This week I feel old. I was cutting up some vintage fabrics I’d gotten in a swap. Stuff straight from my childhood. The kind of calico florals that remind you of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

All over the news is Greece’s potential default, trouble in the Eurozone, American crisis…the entire world is in crisis.

So I sew doll clothing.

I joke at times that I like to live life in a pink bubble, but now and then I do venture out and listen to news, podcasts etc to keep myself in touch with the world.

The older I get…the odder I become I’m quite certain of that. But this week what has stuck with me was the selvage off one of my fabrics.

Every time I travel I seek out each country’s specialty. The lovely woven cottons of Italy, the lace and beautiful fabrics of Austria and so on…All the time it gets harder and harder and I hope that every bit counts. I hope that as I aim to seek out fabric from its source, from family businesses from small vendors..that somehow in all of this big wide world mess, I can make a difference.

I know that I’m not always perfect, sometimes things come from large markets, large world vendors, but at my heart, always in my heart are the local vendors, local sellers, local makers. As a child of a dairy farmer, this grows closer to my heart all the time.

Traditions,Craft, Trade, Workmanship….Pride.

My thoughts for the week. I just had to get them out there. Thanks for listening.

August Already!? http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/08/august-already/ http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/08/august-already/#comments Mon, 01 Aug 2011 20:58:38 +0000 Ruth http://eurotrashdoll.com/?p=611 read more »]]> So, I knew this would happen. July would fly by and suddenly here we are in August. The summer is just racing. Racing like mad and the weeks melt away. I’m excited and at the same time just wish everything would slow down!! Lots of changes going on in this coming year for me, and alot have happened already. I’ve been enjoying the weekly draws, and some of the more unorthodox ways of getting stuff out there to customers. Patchwork has been on my mind, so that is going to be this week’s draw. I have three goodies ready for that. Then as ever there are helmets. I’m trying very hard to fit knitting time in daily and…I’d say its still about ohhh 60% success. I guess its still better than before. I keep having a growing stack of helmets to decorate and that keeps me happy. I know the time is flying until Blythecon UK…Plans need to be made and I’m super excited about all the people I’ll get to see and spend time with while I’m there. There is more I’d like to do on the website. Revamp a few of the pages, add a FAQ question and also a trade page for those of you looking and those of you looking to offload ET merch. I really have enjoyed this last month of regular blogging with you guys. I’ve enjoyed the feedback and interaction. I’d been wanting a way to get more in touch with you in the community and have a more interactive site and its meant alot to me to see people in a more personal environment, get a couple dresses out to people who have not had luck with the site updates and so on. I guess the dialogue is also good because it gives me a place to put out my ideas so that I remember them when I have time to work on them. I can reference the blog, and see what I was thinking..because now and then I have great plans and totally forget! So I guess, for this week…this is it! I hope Everyone is enjoying the summer. I’ve been cycling to and from my job at the Cafe when I have shifts, and have been ‘enjoying’ our sweltering temperatures behind the espresso machine, and simply doing my best to enjoy the summer that Helsinki is offering me as my last summer here. This week we’re going to switch it up with the draw. I’ve got three dresses ready to go to homes, and I think we’ll draw to see who gets to buy them. Changin’ it up! <3

Thanks for all your input, all the interaction. The commends, the feedback…it keeps me tickin’ and helps me give you all what you want I hope!

R

*btw, I wanted to add that I tend to update also on the facebook page group for ET with regularity, and I can be found on Google+ now as well!

There is a link for the facebook group just on the sidebar to the right where it shows ‘ET on the web’

My Heart In My Hands… http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/03/my-heart-in-my-hands/ http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/03/my-heart-in-my-hands/#comments Sat, 12 Mar 2011 09:02:14 +0000 Ruth http://eurotrashdoll.com/?p=368 read more »]]> Yesterday as I woke up to the news of the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis and devastation in Japan, I found myself glued to the TV and to the internet. Waiting to hear news of friends & loved ones over in Japan. I found it impossible to focus on my work at hand, and finally had to mute the television and try to distract myself to really no avail. I kept thinking of all the people I have met during my stays in Japan, the beautiful country, the economic impact this would have and the recovery. It felt so overwhelming and I felt so very helpless. I know tragedies happen every day around the world but for some reason this really hit a soft spot in my heart. Maybe its because when i’m not slinging coffee, I’m spending my days dressing Blythe dolls, handling fabrics from Japan, precious laces and trims, and have spent time sitting in cafes, watching the summer blooms of hydrangea near the forest in Sapporo. Either way, reason or not, the helpless feeling was overwhelming and focus was impossible. Then I realized as I was sewing with a feeling of despair…somehow my pallette today was nothing but solid whites with texture. Perhaps symbolic of the peace I needed to feel…the quiet, the hush…but I realized that something I COULD do..would be to sew an outfit for charity. I don’t have a high income. I sling coffee in a cafe for minimum wage a few days a week to get by and make ends meet. I’m not a person of vast means by any means at all. I make alot of daily sacrifices to be able to make trips to conventions and doll events because meeting my customers is really important to me. Anyhow…I have fabric..and I can sew. Friends checked on some charities for me as I was busy sewing and I’ve found a few good options. Stay posted here as I’ll be posting information about the charity auction on E-bay. E-bay is a great way to get money to charities, they have an affiliate called ‘Mission Fish’ that has hundreds of charities that you can choose from. Depending on the % of your donation, E-bay even donates all the listing fees and everything, so it all goes directly to the charity.

If you also are interested to do a fund raising charity auction for Japan, here is the charity I have decided to donate the proceeds of my charity auction to:

Global Giving Japan Earthquake & Tsunami Relief Fund

They have a link on Mission Fish so its very easy to set up your auction as a charity auction for them and you can choose how much of a % of the sale you want to go towards the charity.

Feel free to contact me with any questions if you too are interested.

Thanks for tuning in, thanks for listening and most of all, thanks for giving.

Censorship…and a few words.. http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/02/censorship-and-a-few-words/ http://eurotrashdoll.com/2011/02/censorship-and-a-few-words/#comments Mon, 14 Feb 2011 19:07:45 +0000 Ruth http://eurotrashdoll.com/?p=354 read more »]]>

If you saw this picture before (sans censor sign), then you probably already know it first was in my flickr stream. Let it be known that I did not delete this photo, but it was deleted BY flickr due to someone reporting me.

The same people who began to post about the so called/alleged bullying, and wearing big girl panties…are free to post their opinions, and point fingers and yet I’m not allowed to state that I’ve not sent hate mail to anyone, nor encouraged bullying ….without the backlash of being reported to flickr for harassment. Who is doing the bullying now?

Harassment is an interesting word, so is bullying for that matter. This photo was posted naming no names and pointing no fingers, it was posted in my flickr stream to make it clear that I had not sent any mails and that if anyone wanted to ask me anything, they were free to do so. I don’t hide behind hidden messages, I don’t have time for silly little games. I share my feelings openly when asked. I don’t take them to other people’s photo streams, nor do I have time to play the clothing buying police or the local conscience. As far as I’m concerned, I see nothing in the above photo that constitutes harassment. In fact, I have a few choice words for flickr for choosing to delete this photo.

I dislike censorship in all forms. If I don’t like what someone posts in their flickr stream..(that is their own, they pay for it, or not, i really don’t care…) is their business. If I disagree, I don’t post/comment..if I don’t like what I see, I don’t look at it! its that simple.

Lost of people talk about putting on the big girl panties…need to really take a look in the mirror. Alot of crap has been flung in my direction. Accusations of hate mail and harassment. I’ve been blocked from commenting on most of the photos that have shown up on flickr pointing fingers at me, or crying wolf about harassment. Not all, but most of them. I don’t really care about being blocked from commenting, but don’t paint me into a corner, keep me from commenting and then not even allow me to speak on my OWN flickr stream..without fear of having my account deleted or reported…for simply making a statment that you may or may not disagree with.

BAD FORM, and SHAME on the lot of you. You know who you are. In the meantime, I think I’ve said enough about this. I’ve never policed what people buy and nor do I intend on starting. But I refuse to be censored. Thank goodness I have my own blog, and own website where I can speak out.

Also, in regards, I don’t censor comments here, nor in my flickr…because again its something I really disagree with. The only thing I censor is spam. Period.

I may or may not agree with a comment but it certainly does not stop it from being published. Freedom of speech and power to the people.

As I was early and more than on time I took some time to check my e-mail, as I had been out a large part of the weekend.
In my inbox there was an e-mail which said it was from my ‘fans’.
After thinking about this all day, I choose to address this e mail here,as is pretty much demanded that I make a public response in the mail that follows.
As ever I wish to be transparent, so I bring you (with some editing to remove names, and finger pointing to an excess) the really exciting e-mail I found in my inbox this morning.

Dear Ruth,
As you may well know, you have many fans of your work out there in the dolly community; fans whose admiration goes hand-in-hand with the desire to have the opportunity to own one of your creations. The moderate difficulty in obtaining one of your dresses or kitty helmets via your online shop is to be expected due to the high demand for the supply. It is to be expected that it may take upwards of 2,3, or 4 attempts in order to actually “score” one of your creations–attempts in which vigilance is key and frequently refreshing the main page of your shop as well as your flickr is certainly adviseable. What is not expected is that one person would have the ability to purchase over 6 items from one shop update, every time they participate in one of your updates. If securing just one item into the shopping cart is difficult, then you can imagine how ridiculous it seems to your numerous fans that just one person would have the luck and/or “magic” to take more than half of the items in ONE single update, and then repeat this virtual hounding of all items in almost each and every update. I do not think you are unaware of who I am referring to, but in order to avoid any confusion (though there certainly should be none as this phenomenon is quite “unique”), here is the link to this person’s flickr page:XXXXXXXXXXXXXX(censored)

That the unilateral purchasing of your items by this person is unfair is obvious; whether or not there are other things at play here is what is suspected. The ultimate reason for this letter is to make you aware of the fact that fans and collectors have noticed what is going on and are expectedly unhappy and disappointed. The amount of items that this person is able to easily secure on a constant basis is no longer viewed as a coincidence, especially due to the sheer magnitude of items that make it into their shopping cart–of which photos of their incredible “loot” are later boastedly displayed on their flickr photostream for all to see. Needless to say, this has lead to many questions–questions about the ethics of your sales, questions about whether items are pre-purchased or set aside for this particular person in advance, and questions about the supposed “opportunity” each and every collector has to purchase items from your shop. You have asserted that you do not take custom commissions for your work and therefore collectors must try to purchase via your updates; when ONE person each and every time is able to purchase over 5 items at a time while others can barely get one item in their cart, there is something certainly amiss.

I speak for my fellow collectors and their disappointment that you have a responsibility to address this situation and issue some kind of explanation besides saying that this other collector is simply “lucky”; you have the responsibility to implement a more fair system in which opporunity is EQUAL and not biased towards one certain person or persons. We hope that a difference is made quickly so that in future updates this one person’s shopping cart is not “magically” filled with every item listed in the shop. We also hope and that you have (or have already had) the insight to realize how unfair this occurence is and how ludicrous its repetition.

Sincerely,
Your Eurotrash Fans

My only response to this at first was…wow. WOW. Not only are my ethics being questioned, but I am being required to be accountable to how certain people are able to buy from me. I could get upset over many things. First off, the bullying and singling out one of my customers to assume something shady or untoward is going on is completely unfair, to both of us. The comments in flickr border on uncomfortable and accusatory, and this is not acceptable. Are we children in a playground??

I am in no way trying to be a martyr here, or even say ‘poor me’. But I have to say, that my integrity as a business person, my ethics and morals are being questioned here without even giving me the benefit of the doubt. To me this is absurd. If I was doing pre-planned business with one of my customers I can guarantee you I would do it in a transparent manner, and just put under the photo, ‘For: XXXXXX’. Listing items in a shop requires my time, and time is money and my time is at a premium. I hold down part time jobs and do my best to simply get by. Afterall, I make the items I sell and therefore I guess in all rational thinking I can sell them the way I see fit. This is pretty cold and harsh way to put it, but I don’t understand why there would be the need for subterfuge if I chose to sell my items to simply a single person or ‘chosen few’. From a business woman’s point of view, the more variety in my customer base, the better. I cannot even express how happy I am when I see a new name in my inbox/customer report. New customers are only a GOOD thing. I am so thankful for every single person who supports EuroTrash (the old and the NEW!), and trust me, I DO know how sought after things are, and I do my best to offer them in as many varying ways possible. I’ve gone to surprise listings, listing only few items at a time vs. 10′s at a time. Changing up the times of day, etc. Most people don’t understand how bad I feel when I see the genuine disappointment in ‘missing out’. I do take it personally even though I shouldn’t. I care more than I should, and it all comes down to how invested I am in EuroTrash, and how much of myself I do invest in this ‘child’ of my hands…..I struggle sincerely to tell anyone ‘No’ and in fact my tremendous waiting list is testament to that. I only opened my list after years of declining commissions. But I wanted people to have the chance, no matter how fast their modems were.So to have my ethics, my honesty and my integrity as a business person in this case questioned is extremely offensive.

I could go on and on about…the evolution of keeping the shop, moving to surprise listings, the stress of telling people I will NOT sell ‘off shop’ in spite of many requests. The most information I have divulged to customers since I have gone to doing the surprise listings is some people might mail me if I am listing to my shop to ask how many items, and I really have no problems to say ‘yes, i’m listing 3 items today.’ I don’t twitter about the updates, I do not facebook the updates as I know some people are not on Twitter, and some are not on Facebook. I do remain on my gmail in order to trouble shoot should there be an issue with the website.

In the last year I have engaged in multiple trades with various individuals. I have traded goods for dolls, goods for goods, and always with an agreed value and its an agreement between the person and myself, and I feel that as someone who creates something that someone else wants this is my own choice, and we engage in a trade of goods, there is nothing to be ashamed of. I never put these items in my shop, but you may see photos that say ‘For: xxxxxxxx’. Sometimes you might see someone get a large amount of items. Quite often some of these people ask me to hold the items, ship them altogether with tracking. Which is always reasonable. Some large shipments are also the result of someone getting an item or two from multiple updates throughout a week or so.

As for my shop. Here is how an update goes. I list the items one at a time (to help discourage cart filling all at the same time, as its very possible when I do multiple item ‘drops) with a little bit of time in between each listing. While an item is in my shop..I honestly have no super powers to put them in and out of carts. They are lost to me in cyberspace until I get a purchase report from my shop and confirmation of payment from paypal. The transaction is over before I have any idea of who or where it has gone. Now and then when there have been checkout issues with my shop, I have been emailed by a customer and have disabled an item, but I can honestly say that I always get the purchase report, inevitably from my shop software, and its always coincided with the person who has contacted me. I have no control over who buys what, who gets what, and nor do I let people know in advance, no matter how good a friend and or customer you might be to me. To me this is as fair as it gets. To begin to censor my shop, who can and cannot buy? This is more dishonest than anything else I could imagine.

How does someone get this lucky? I really don’t know. You have to be alot more tech savvy than I am, is all I can say. I know you can use an RSS reader to be informed of activity on the website..I have no idea how RSS readers work and I’ve never looked into how you set them up. Maybe some buyers use an RSS feed/alert system? I don’t know. I honestly do not know. Most people would back me up when I say that I have commented in Twitter in the past as to not knowing how people can be so fast, when I cannot even get into my own shop and test a product to my cart before its snatched up. I make no announcements and still an item is gone in seconds. I don’t know? chances are if I were trying to buy my OWN product I would not be fast enough.

Do I empathize? absolutely. Do I feel bad? always. I would clothe the blythe world if I could.I still hope to do it. One dress at a time.

I will always be honest, I will always be transparent. But I will not tolerate bullying (or the bullying of my customers). I will not tolerate being told I’m dishonest. As always I encourage any of my customers, or would be customers to ask me anything. One of my favourite sayings is, ‘You’re never safe from surprise until you’re dead.’ (people who spend time with me can vouch for this.) Within the limits of personal privacy I am always happy to answer questions. If you really want to know why I don’t take on commissions, feel free to mail me and ask! If you want to know why I’ve been particularly slow with my helmet list this year, by all means…ask me. But don’t accuse me of being dishonest & unethical without giving me the benefit of the doubt. The same goes for my customers.

This open letter to me demanded an explanation and demanded answers. So here are my answers to the best of my ability. I’ll leave the comments on for this post, ’cause I may have overlooked something here.

Since I don’t know the scope of ‘my EuroTrash Fans’ The best I can do is publish this right here and hope it eases everyone’s minds about my ‘shady’ dealings and questionable ethics.

Lets play nice out there.

Cheers.
